1/2 Oz American Gold Eagle
Description
The 1/2 Oz American Gold Eagle is minted by the US Mint at West Point, New York, and contains 1/2 troy oz of gold. Gold eagles are one of the most respected and recognized gold bullion coins in the world, and certainly in the US. No other gold coin enjoys such popularity, respect, and liquidity among American investors as the US Gold Eagle.
Over 13 million gold eagles have been sold since the US Mint began making them in 1986. As an American coin with a $50 face value, the American Gold Eagle is legal tender. However, the face value is nominal because of its value as gold far exceeds it value as American currency.
Fractional gold eagles are also available in 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. However, because of the large demand among for 1 oz gold eagles, the US Mint will sometimes suspend production of the fractional gold coins in order to keep up with investor demand on the 1 oz coins.
The coin itself weighs 0.5455 troy oz, and contains 0.5 troy oz of pure gold. It is composed of 91.7% gold and 8.3% silver/copper alloy. This alloy makes the American Gold eagle a beautiful, yet sturdy gold coin that can accommodate more circulation and handling than pure gold coins.
